Sandpaper is produced in a range of sizes and grit sizes. It is used to remove material from surfaces, either to make them smoother or, to remove a layer of material (such as old paint), or sometimes to make the surface rougher (for example, as a preparation for gluing).
Grit refers to the average particle diameter. The larger the grit, the smaller the particle size. The smaller the grit, the coarser the particles are.
